Two teenage girls go missing in the span of one year- both are labeled runaways and forgotten by the system. Forgotten, until Rachel, a determined mother, walks into the office of private investigator, Gavin English. She needs to know for sure what's happened to her daughter, Jennifer. A nice pair of legs and a little cash go a long way, so he's on the case. When the mangled body of the first runaway is found downtown, and all the signs point to a cannibal, Gavin worries that Jennifer may suffer the same fate. Can he find the girl, and the killer, before it's too late? To The Bone is a bloody, dark, and sexy Psychological Thriller, and the first Gavin English story.

In "To The Bone" you have a hard drinking, detective into indiscriminate sex as the hero of the story, which some will not like. The story is on the short side and I would have liked to see more development of the plot and characters but it was an interesting read and extremely well written. I will say if you have a weak stomache this book won't be to your liking as it can be very violent and graphic in places and gave me a few EWWW moments even though bloody scenes don't normally bother me. I enjoyed the characters including Gavin's police officer friend David who figures prominently in the story line and in the sequel just released "On The Edge". I'd like to learn more of Gavin's past in future Gavin English novels including more information on his exwife who was brought into the story a couple of times. "To The Bone" was also extremely well edited so kudos to whomever did Ken Lindsey's editing as I didn't find a single typo or mispelled word which is rare in most books today. If you are interested in Dark Thrillers I would recommend picking this one up as a quick read and to become familiar with the author's work.

To The Bone Ken Lindsey 9781312041714 Books Reviews

To the Bone evokes the image of a noir-ish detective fiction with a modern twist. A gripping thriller for fans of the hard-boiled detectives.

The horror of the teacher who prefers fresh young meat and the detective with his share of vices. An entertaining read.

Hoping there are future stories including Gavin English.
I really enjoyed this. It was a quick read but very engrossing and wrapped up nicely, though not perfectly for the private investigator. The killer was a sicko and there was some great gore.

I received this, from the author, in return for a review.

TO THE BONE is a classic example of detective fiction using the inverted story format. The crimes and the villain's identity are revealed early in the story, letting the reader focus more on learning about Gavin English and the how/why behind the gruesome acts. (Note Although not explicitly graphic, this story involves cannibalism so there are moments which could be stomach-churning for some readers. So know your limits and proceed with caution.)

A former-cop-turned-private-investigator, English is drifting along in the river of life. He's got a complicated relationship with his ex-wife and his two closest buddies are his ex-partner from the police force and a high school chum working in the porn film industry. He smokes and drinks too much, eats too little and is far too familiar with the local strip club. But this anti-hero is not so cynical that he is incapable of horror once he realizes what his latest job involves. And the author leaves a clue here and there to show that a measure of optimism survives beneath English's jaded exterior.

Written in the first person, TO THE BONE takes the reader into English's head as he works to prevent another tragedy. Given some of his antics, sometimes that's not a good thing. (*lol*) But again, he's an anti-hero and for this first book, much of his background remains a mystery. It will be interesting to see how his character develops in subsequent books, as well as whether or not his sidekicks return for another Gavin English investigation.

[As an aside, the book's double-line formatting bothered me. IDK why it's necessary when even most DTB books used single lines. Also, may seem silly but I consider it as space filler = abuse (re page flip function).]
I loved every minute of this story. So scary it had me cringing, and I couldn't stop turning the pages. Classically hard-boiled, delightfully noir. Fun mystery with strong thriller elements, this story will have you reading long into the night. Highly recommended.

Picking up the next in the series.
I think I had read every possible twist on serial killers. BUT NO!! Leave it to J A Konrath to link up with an author who has an imagination greater or it it worse then his?
Characters are well developed, plot grabs you & dose not let go!
I have always been fascinated by the short story or novella. It is a true art form to create, develop a cast of characters & plot in just a few mind grabbing pages.
This book leaves you wanting more of Ken Lindsey's dark mind.
