Like many male adolescents of my era, finding "The Avengers" on the UHF dial was a revelation. Not only was it the first British television show that captivated me, but its sense of otherworldliness, and halluncinagenic storylines were a perfect match for 1960's television production. Of course, there was another revelation, the beauty, style and sohistication of Emma Peel, played by Diana Rigg. She was a pioneer in many ways, and the dark leather jumpsuit was only one of the firsts to hit the small screen. She was also much taller and more lithe than the typical heroine of small screen. Her character was independent and witty. Not to mention fearless.
The role turned out to be merely a two year speed bump for Ms. Rigg, but it propelled her career and made many of her subsequent acting choices possible. Outsiders reviewing her career may look at her vehicle in "The Avengers" as the highlight, but according to this book, they would be mistaken. In fact, the book only dwells on this part of her career for three or four ages. It actually talks more about her co-star, Patrick MacNee in this part of the book, than it does about her.
The book tells of her Shakesperean acting background, differentiating a British Shakesperian acting background from an American Shakeserean acting background. It tells of each of her major acting exeriences after leaving The Avengers, giving not too much depth to any assignment.
Ms. Rigg, besides her stunning beauty, is a very accomplished actress. Her voice is full of inflection and purpose, and the range of roles she has undertaken show her confidence, as well as her sense of humor.
throughout the book, I strove to learn about the actual person, and in this biography, although a little lightweight, her independence, her strong spirit, and her courage came through. Some of her quotes reveal a free-tinking soul. Talking about how the act of sex is the funniest one liner G_d has produced. And authoring a book of the most poison reviews, which brought joy and catharsis to her life.
I would like to learn more about Ms. Rigg. This was a good place to start.

Interesting easy read - Enjoyed it
Kathleen Tracy catches the spirit and tenacity of Diana Rigg perfectly. It's wonderful to know that Dame Diana Rigg is every bit as smart, witty, and determined as her television counterpart, Enma Peel.
Being a long time fan of The Avengers, I want to know everything about my TV heroes.
There's not many a biography to find of Diana Rigg, so I bought this book. Since I read it after 'Blind in one ear' from Patrick Macnee, which is stunning in it's detail and honesty, it comes a bit as a disappointment.
Kathleen Tracy basicly collected every interview and bits of information she could find (quite some work in itself) and connects it all into a more or less logical order.
But it's a bit annoying to read all the time from which magazine or source any remark came.
It definitively gives you a more or less coherent image of who Diana Rigg was and is, but it's not exactly a smooth read.
More for the devoted fan like me, I'd say.
Another strange bio-it makes a lot of mention of 'The Avenger' obviously but the only photos are 3 'cheese cake' type of Rigg and the only photo of Rigg with Patrick MacNee is from a subsequent American series in which he guested and unfortunately didn't do too well-not Rigg's fault.
Just finished reading this bio of a woman I have admired since she played Emma Peel on THE AVENGERS. The bio rounded out my knowledge of this fascinating woman, and I now have even more respect for her once I finished the book (which I read in one sitting). It helped me to see what a multi-faceted person she is well beyond the role she played so long ago and where she is today.
I thought the book was well-written with good continuity. I would definitely recommend this to those who share my fascination with Diana Rigg.
I always thought I would love to meet Diana Rigg. Her intelligence as an actress and as a person shows clearly in her work. Through reading this O know I am right. Brava Dame Diana and thanks for sharing your talent with the world.
A collection of newspaper articles have been woven together into a text so out of date that an innocent man is listed as a killer
