After reading a short bit of this, I remembered I had read this before, much to my embarrassment (this is why I review so I don't buy and reread unless I want to) . But I continued on as it's a short read and I didn't remember much of the story. The hero is a likable guy (Silas, Lord Stone) though the dashing widow, Caro, is an immature brat, unable to decide what she wants: a lover or Lord Stone. He's in love with her, but she's afraid an affair will ruin their friendship (as if her dithering isn't having the same effect).I usually like Ms. Campbell's books which is why I continued, but now I remember why this one was so forgettable. The ending is abrupt. I felt like I was missing chapters. This has the potential to be a better book than it is, but unfortunately and even though I read it twice, it wasn't worth it.

Lord save me from stupid heroines! I'm sorry for being harsh, but Caroline was in no way all that bright.
She had strict parents that had her marry a man she didn't love. A dull man, from the countless repeats. For ten years, she'd been unhappy. After mourning for him for a year, she decided she wanted to have lovers. No more marriage for her.
I get it, I do. Marriages - life even - were different back then. I imagine not many were lucky enough to marry out of love.
So when you have a hero like Silas, who gave up on his man-wh*re ways because he fell in love and was hoping to woo Caroline, I'm asking you, what the heck? Caroline saw marriage as a prison, because of her first one. She also saw love that way. She kept repeating herself, over and over and over again and what pissed me off was when he finally told her he loved and she was all, "I forbid it."
Girl, what?
Had I been in Silas' shoes, I would said to hell with her. I'm sorry, but Caroline really wasn't worth all the heartache and hustle.
I wasted my time on this book and I'm sorry, but I really can't recommend it.
What a disappointment! I was just getting into the story and BOOM! it's over. That's just wrong. I just don't believe in paying for installments. As far as I'm concerned that is extortion.
The story premise is good, the characters were strong and I was looking forward to their interactions. Too bad I won't get that chance.
Extremely boring, too much inner thoughts, too much silliness, I found myself passing pages to finish it as soon as possible.
So I read this while sitting in the OPD section of a very busy hospital because after I went there I was told the doctor would be 2 hrs late and therefore needed some serious distraction.
Boy did this book fulfill that need and more!! I loved it!! It was written mostly from the hero's POV and he was hilarious! The affections and intentions are made clear from the beginnings and the rest of the book simply flows from there. I ended up sitting among a lot of sick, miserable and some even angry people and kept giggling and snickering and overall having a rollicking good time with this book, which unfortunately earned me quite a few unforgiving stares and glares. I forgot the time, forgot my illness and just reveled in the story.
It was very well written and although there wasn't much of a plot - it was a shorter book, it was perfect.
If there was anything I didn't like - it was simply that sometimes I didn't understand the heroine's actions and thought process and while I occasionally wanted to sit her down and tell her not to be a nitwit - she didn't stay silly for long and it didn't detract me from the story too much.
Lured by the good price, I made the mistake of buying the series of short novels before trying one complete one. They are all about the same, just as the covers of the six books are nearly the same, except for the color of the dress. And that means they are all a tiny thread of a romance story & pursuit wound around several long explicit sex scenes; scenes with pretty much the same "action," like the guys all went to the same "How To...." class. At least in the sixth book, the couple is married, although separated for five years before reconnecting.
So, if that's what you go for, have at it. I wish I hadn't.
This was an incredible love story about a widow (Caroline) who wants nothing more than to bask in her newfound independence, and Lord Stone (Silas) who intends to to show his beloved the passion and love she's been missing her entire life...
This is the third book by Ms. Campbell that I've read and I find her writing truly enchanting. It does seem though that I love her heroes more than I do her heroines. Silas was everything a woman could want; handsome, virile, romantic, and determined to keep Caroline by his side forever. I liked Caro for the most part although there were times I wanted to knock her upside the head. However, her complete fear of being under another man's control felt real and had me empathizing with her more than once. Both characters were imperfect, but their flaws made them feel more like flesh and blood people to me. In the end this was simply a beautifully written historical romance. This couple's passion and utter sense of belonging was absolutely lovely to witness, especially in a novella. I did think the ending was a little abrupt though, which ended at 86% and loc 1714 of 1985 on my kindle. Still, I can't wait to read Caro's two friends books next and would gladly recommend both this author and story!
